It was a bit of a surprise that Mitt Romney beat Rick Santorum by eight votes at the last minute during the Iowa Caucus, but it was an even bigger surprise that Rick Santorum was the second runner-up.  Romney received an endorsement by an old runner that beat him in Iowa four years ago, Senator John McCain.  Rick Santorum is using his second place position as a fix, to reassure to people that he will be Romney's main challenger.  Ron Paul came in third place and is establishing his libertarian message for the next race in New Hampshire.  I learned that Michele Bachman has dropped out of the race and Rick Perry has decided to stay in the race after thinking things over at home.  This will effect the rest of the candidates because it's their job to persuade those voters of Michele Bachman.  The first caucus is important in the political arena because it sets the foundation of the rest of the races.  The voters of our country will probably pay attention to the front runners rather than everyone else.  We will have to see if that stands true in next week's caucus in New Hampshire.
